Page forty four is short, which should have made this one easier, and has not.

It is a marsh world I visited exactly once and never went back to, filed under the name the Directory gave it, because somebody filled out a form before anybody thought to ask the marsh what it called itself: Sorvann. The Sorvanni, if you trust the checkbox. Tessek, if you trust the two elders who fed me for a tick and a half and never once asked why a man kept declining the soup.

Tessek, near as it renders, means the noticed. That is their self-term, the whole of it, no qualifier. Órvaskt, the elder who did most of the talking while the other one watched the pot, told me without a trace of complaint that on Sorvann being noticed is the entire function of a god or a monster. Everything the fourteen of each actually do, she said, is just commentary on the noticing.

Fourteen gods. Fourteen monsters. Thirteen names on the second list and the usual pause where the fourteenth goes, and I did not need it explained to me twice why nobody on Sorvann had ever stood in front of that one long enough to hand it a name. You do not get a good look at a thing whose whole method is arrive, take an accounting, leave. (I wrote that down at the time as an observation about them. I would like that on the record before the fire has it too.)

I filed the entry, thanked Órvaskt for soup I never touched, and left the way I left everywhere in those days, because a Category 3 world with a season to spare had thirteen other slots on that year's schedule and Sorvann was one datapoint among sixteen. I did not think about it again for eleven clicks.

Then a follow-up survey came through Ossul's registry the way follow-up surveys do, decades late and three copies removed from anyone who had actually been there, and it told me, in the flat unbothered language surveys use for everything, that Sorvann had a name for its fourteenth now.

Mörk, they call it. One clipped syllable, the exact shape their tongue keeps for the last line of the list, a slot that had sat empty and metrical for as long as anyone could count, the length of a held breath and no longer. A stranger came, the survey said, some years after the correspondent's visit (it said correspondent, not me, and I have decided I prefer it that way), wrote down everything about them that had never once been written down, and left without staying to be thanked, corrected, or asked back. And the marsh looked at that shape and decided it was the fourteenth's shape exactly, and clipped the stranger's own name down to fit the beat. Nobody put it to a vote. Nobody needed to. It simply fit, the way a word fits a hole that was already cut its size.

Every world I have ever filed reports the same fourteen and thirteen, and I have spent my whole career on the near side of that pause, filing the blank line and moving on. I did not think, doing that, that I would end up finishing one. The name is mine, worn down to the one shape thirteen others never fit. Not a metaphor. A line on somebody's list, the same as every list I have ever copied out.

I could have written back. I had the clicks for it, sitting right there in Ossul's queue, and I spent them on eleven other entries instead and did not send the one line that would have told Sorvann their fourteenth had not meant anything by it. That is true, and it is not anywhere else in this case.

I have been sitting here trying to remember what Órvaskt's face did when she said the noticed to me, whether there was anything in it I should have caught and did not, and I cannot get past the soup. That detail is only on this page. It is not in me anywhere else that I can find, which is a thing I have started noticing about a great many details lately and have not yet found anywhere honest to put down.

I am about to burn the only place, in this case or anywhere else I know of, that says so outright: that Mörk is my own name with the edges gone, not a coincidence of syllables. Sorvann's registry will go on saying correspondent. Nobody who reads it after tonight has any way to close that distance.

Into the fire it goes, Mörk and Tessek and Órvaskt's soup and all, and Sorvann keeps the only version of me it ever had reason to trust: the one that never wrote.
