Page ninety-one.

There is nothing else in the case tonight, and I want that said plainly before anything else, because every page I have taken out of this box in front of you this season came out of a case that still had most of itself left behind it. This one does not. Ninety of ninety-one slots are already gone, some of them in front of you, most of them not, because not every night this season needed telling and there were a great many nights. Tonight there is one slot left, at the very back, exactly where I put it a whole season before I had any right to reach it, so that whatever else happened first, this would happen last.

I have known for a long time why I put it there. What I had not worked out, until tonight, sitting with the last page in my hand and nothing behind it, is what it costs to save the hardest one for the end. There is no case still half full to point at. No other page to do first, to say, honestly, that most of the account survives and this is only one page among many. It is not among anything any more. It is the only page in a box built for ninety-one, and it is the last thing I am going to take out of it.

Some of you already know what is written on it, if you were reading a season ago. I am not going to write it out again here to remind you. It went onto this page once, in my own hand, on purpose, and it burns exactly once tonight, and I would rather it did that than sit here spelled out a second time by a man looking for a reason to keep holding it a little longer than he already has.

I read it first on Cendre, off a page that was never mine, in a hand belonging to a child generations gone by the time I ever set foot there. I told you at the time I was not going to copy it, and I meant it, and for a long while I kept meaning it. Then I built this case, and near the very back of it, ahead of everything else I had any business writing yet, I copied it after all. Once. I gave you the whole of my reasoning that night because I did not trust myself to have a reason and not say it where you could check my working.

The short version, since I am not going to make you sit through the long one twice. Ossul's queue keeps a number safe not by hiding it but by nobody having any reason left to open the drawer it sits in. Tveggi's mark keeps a name safe from a mouth built to eat spoken ones, because a mark cut into stone was never a sound to begin with. A written thing, filed somewhere with no traffic through it, outlasts a spoken thing, and outlasts an unwritten one. That was the whole of my reasoning the night I broke my own rule and wrote four letters at the back of a box nobody but Ossul and I have ever had cause to open.

Here is what I did not see coming, holding the last page over a fire that has already taken ninety others. The argument I am about to make for burning this one is the same argument. Not a better one, found late, in a harder season. The very same reasoning, carried one step past where I carried it that night in Deep Registry. A queue nobody opens is safe. A mark nobody has to say aloud is safe. A page that does not exist anywhere, for anybody, under any circumstance, ever again, is safer than either, taken all the way to the place that reasoning was always going to end.

I know that. I am putting it on the page, in my own words, before I do the thing, because it would be easy to hand you some newer and nobler account of tonight, and I do not have one. I am doing what I did on this page the first time. I am only doing it once more, and further than I have ever taken it.

And since I am being honest about what this page still owes me before I let it go, here it is. I went looking, before I picked it up tonight, for the color of the light in the room on Cendre where I first read it. I was once certain I could have told you. I cannot tonight, and I am telling you that anyway, because I said early in this case that I would keep telling you what goes missing, and stopping now, on this page of all of them, felt like a worse kind of quiet than the one I am about to make on purpose.

There is no bracket on this page, my dear readers. I have not put one on a page for longer than I have been keeping count of, and I am not going to force one in here to prove I still have it in me. I do not.

So. I did not sharpen anything tonight. The stylus that wrote this word does not need me to touch it up a second time, and there is a kind of respect in leaving a thing exactly the way it was left. I held the page longer than I have held any page this season, not reading it, because I did not need to read it to know every word on it, only holding it, the way you hold something you already know entirely by its weight before you let it go.

Then I let it go.

It caught evenly, the whole sheet at once, faster than I expected and slower than I wanted, and for the short while that took there was a version of tonight where I still had it, and then there was not.

I opened the lid the rest of the way just now, the same lid that has never once sat flush, and looked all the way to the back, where this page sat waiting its turn for a whole season doing nothing else. There is nothing there. There is nothing anywhere else in the box either. Ninety-one slots, and every last one of them empty.

That is where I am tonight. A case I built badly, with my own hands, holding nothing at all.
